Hi Steve, I suggest that after you learn Czech, you should take up Polish - when a Polish person meets a Czech person, they always have fun, even if they can't understand each other perfectly, and this is because they find each other's languages immensely amusing :) So maybe this would be true for you as well.

This is an impressive effort, Steve! It's cool for all of us to see one of your languages still in its earlier stages.

It was getting better towards the end :-)

I'm also interested in this. Thanks for bringing it up.
Steve, perhaps a 5 minute video would suffice to show up how this can be done?

I couldn't do that language. But props for Steve for taking it on. LOL

Agreed with what you say. I find non-facial conversations rather difficult because speaking a language is more than just having the words coming out of your mouth, and hearing a language is much more than just listening. This is why I still struggle with phone conversations in Spanish.

Hey Steve, you said in the description you import single words and phrases into lingq. How does one do that? Is there a way to do it without creating a lesson?

Чешский язык очень схож с Русским :)

I agree. At least early on in conversations, I find that seeming the other person's face really helps. You can see their lips (as you say) and also facial expressions. Seeing a slight frown, or little smile, for example, is sometimes all the guidance you need. Later on, voice-alone is enough, since you are confident enough to steer yourself.

You are certainly to be commended for holding your end of a half-hour conversation in Czech after less than a year of study! I don't think I would be anywhere near confident enough to do that myself, although your overall experience with languages no doubt helps quite a bit. I think I would probably hold off entirely until I had more input, but that's probably just me being too shy to give it a go. Thanks for recording this!

Yes, we adults like to sound like intelligent adults. Kids don't care. They don't mind sounding like kids. That is their great advantage. We always sound more intelligent in our native language. So why learn other languages? Because it enriches us in so many ways that a little discomfort is worth it.

Amazing Mr. Kaufmann

Absolutely. That's been a learning process for me. From my Dutch practice, I've learned that it can be really uncomfortable at times but that it's something that I just need to live with. Sounding like a fool is a part of things. Hopefully I feel like much less of a fool by the time I feel ready to speak French! :)

Anyone who is not prepared to step outside his or her comfort zone had best not attempt language learning. Thanks for the words of encouragement, and I can assure you I will stay the course.

On I know how you feel Steve. Keep at it! :)

I'd say it'd affect understanding a little. You get to match the sound to their lips (supposing there's not much lag) and read their face and gestures.
Phone voices are always more difficult to understand than those in person, though. I heard that the frequency highs and lows get clipped.

I can understand you some times, Polish and Czech (and Slovak) are very similar :)
Keep up the good work

I am sure for your improving, I hope for your pleasure, if you decide to travel to our country. You are great. English, German, French, Spanish etc... more common languages in the world, that people try to learn, if it is not their natural. But Czech...or Slovak language.... :) I am som happy for it. Both of them (Slovak or Czech) are very interesting :) GOOD LUCK !

Thanks. I hope to improve in a number of areas, including pronunciation. I will be working on it, and especially during my five days of immersion in Prague, I hope to make a big leap forward.

As to voice chat, this depends on the tutor anad the learner. Some turn on their video camera and others don't. I tend to turn mine on. I find it more pleasant to see the person, but some of my best tutors prefer not to. I don't think it affects learning outcomes in any way.

Pokračuj v dobré práci a hodně štěstí!
It's interesting you sometimes use pronunciation and conjugation from Russian since you learn this language. I watch your videos regularly and find them inspiring and motivating. Keep up a great job and good luck!

Wow you sound like a Russian :D No, sorry, I don't mock you :-)). Keep it up, I believe in you :-) You have actually good knowledge of Czech, just as always, pronunciation is very hard for English native speakers. Ať se daří and nepolevuj :-))

I cannot say enough about Jarda. He is an ideal tutor. He does not correct too much when we speak. He just encourages me, and no matter what nonsense I say, he manages to keep the conversation going, with lots of good cheer. He is never impatient.
He sends me the most detailed report of my mistakes converted into corrected phrases. He also records this for me. He has single-handedly created a mountain of Czech content for our library at LingQ.

nice...I am Slovak woman, but Czech language is very similar. I like it. Slovakia is next to Czech rebublic in central Europe :)

Jarda seems like a very patient person, speaks very clearly, and corrects you very gently and politely. I wish I had had somebody like him helping me in the past. One thing I am surprised about here is that it seems you only have voice-chat. Don't you find it helpful to be able to see each other's faces too?
