I didn't know the formal definition. I always thought fluency is when you can say anything without trying to replace any word you have in mind with some kind of definition. For example if I want to find a pharmacy (and don't know it is called like this) I would ask somebody where can I buy some medicine etc. I always replace a word I can't find with something else just to keep talking. If that's fluency, it's really not that hard to be fluent in any language.

Very well said, I agree with everything you said.

-if you want to gage your fluency in a language, i propose a hypothetical, say that you learned Farsi and say that if your were to pack your bags and catch the first flight over to Iran (or where ever your own newly acquired language is natively spoken) would you be able to continue to live over there as you do here? mind you some mistakes are warranted or even expected but would you have reasonably no problem to slip into your new surroundings and engage in the same routines that you do here?

In my opinion it's sometimes really hard to give a honest opinion about one's true language skills; mainly because you don't want to hurt his feelings or even discourage him to keep on practising. But I always try to tell my objective opinion and to use the most positive words in order to do that.

@FluentCzech , how many marker-boards do you have?

Personally I don't use the word fluent, it's to annoying, I just say I'm pretty good in X or something along that line

A new, fantastic video, which kind of says it all. Luca
express their ideas in that language clearly (even if there are some small mistakes).

You have an interesting definition of fluency. For me fluency is being able to understand most of the material that comes your way (ie newspapers, conversations, many books*, tv show, etc) *the thing about books is that literature involves a higher level of a language(novels) like even though I would consider myself fluent in english, when I read novels there are still MANY words I do not understand. Same in Spanish. I would never consider someone 'native' but fluent would be if they can...

I do not believe self judgment of Fluency is delusional at all. I think if you go by how much you understand a newspapers, movies, etc and how other people have judged your fluency is a great judge at how fluent you are. It is not how fluent you 'feel' but how fluent you can logically deduce you are based on how comfortable you can communicate in that language, your abilities. I do not think fluency should be based on a set in stone numerical value like some would assert.

I really like your videos. You always explain things so well and have really good content. I personally think fluency is something a lot of people get caught up over, I know fluency is great, but I think people should just have fun and learn the language without constantly testing their level of fluency.

I think I know whom you are speaking of. The person who claims to be fluent in over 100 languages.
Great video, ideed.

If the proof is in the pudding (which I firmly believe it is), than who is to assay the pudding? Certainly not standard testing, but perhaps the assessment of a large team of natives and fluent nonnatives could be close to accurate.

Also it is possible to sound entirely nonnative and yet have little if any trouble communicating. A case in point is Arnold Swartzenegger here in US.

Your videos are so great ! I love them !

I will never be at a native language except in my native language because I don't live in those countries and it's impossible to live in several countries at the same time haha =)

understanding the finer points and the complexities, let alone using this kind of language correctly without coming across as sounding wierd. I think your videos show the stuff that frankly we are too afraid to admit to ourselves. I do think it puts things into perspective. especially the limits of learning a second, third, fourth language. I also feel much less alone and hard on myself after seeing your videos....Thanks!

Very good conclusion you've drawn from the question you raised. I agree with you that even after many years and much progress in the eyes(or ears) of a native speaker we will never seem to be fluent as the smallest accent in the wrong place or leaving out a simple preposition makes you sound unnatural.

I watched two films recently in English ,Once upon a time in the west and inland empire, and I was struck by the idiomatic phrases piled after each other. I could NEVER see a non native speaker
