أمثلة: جمل تحتوي على الفعلين can و could:
I can help you
She can't read very well

ملاحظات:
نستعمل can في النفي على هذه الشكل: cannot أو can't, إلا أن can't هو الشكل الأكثر شيوعا.
صيغة النفي لفعل could هي could not و couldn't
القواعد في استعمال can و could والفروق فيما بينهما:
Can و can't تستعمل في زمن الحاضر:
I can play the piano
We can stop working now
وقد تستعمل أحيانا في زمن المستقبل:
She can come tonight
I can't see you tomorrow
Could و couldn't تستعمل في زمن الماضي, ونستعملها للتحدث عن القدرة ومعرفة القيام بشيء معين:
She could play the piano when she was five
She couldn't speak English very well when she arrived
لا نستعمل could في الإيجاب positive للتحدث عن الأحداث التي وقعت, لكننا نستعمل could't للتحدث الأحداث والأنشطة التي لم تكن ممكنة:
She couldn't come to the party , لم تستطع أن تحضر للحفلة
لا نستعمل she could come to the party
They couldn't eat all their dinner لن يكن بإمكانهما أن يتناولا العشاء بالكامل
لا نستعمل they could eat all their dinner
نستعمل كذلك can و could في الطلب:
Can you help me?
Could you open the door for me, please?
Can I have a drink, please?
Could we use your phone?
كلا الكلمتين can و could تعتبران صحيحتين عند استعمالهما في الطلب, لكن could تعتبر أكثر تهذيبا في اللغة الانجليزية.
